HUNSDON GARDENING CLUB (Established 1958)
Hunsdon Gardening Club welcomes anyone interested in gardening, whether beginner or experienced with the aim of sharing knowledge between members.
Who we are
The Club started life as the Village Allotments and Gardens Association on May 21st 1958. In 1961 the name was changed to Hunsdon Gardening Club and in 1966
the control of the allotments was handed over to the Parish Council.
Since 1969 we have been affiliated to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and our Autumn Produce Show is run according to RHS rules using one of their approved judges.
This affiliation provides free entry to an RHS garden once a year for a club outing, a free magazine, free advice on gardening problems and plant identification, and
the Banksian Medal for the Autumn Show awarded to the exhibitor with the highest marks in the horticultural classes.
What we do
The Club is run by a Committee which arranges outings and events and members pay a small annual subscription, currently £3. The AGM is held in April, the formal
business being followed by a quiz, social event or talk. An outing to a garden is usually organised in the spring or summer. Recent visits have included Highgrove,
Hyde Hall, Myddleton House and the Beth Chatto garden.
Our annual plant sale is usually held in conjunction with the village Fete in June, where we have a large stall selling plants donated by members. We sell high quality
plants at realistic prices and usually raise around £300, some of which goes to support Village Hall funds.
The Autumn Produce Show in September fills the Village Hall with fine fruit, vegetables, flowers, cookery and items of arts and crafts from both adults and children.
The “Yellow Book” distributed to all households in the village in July gives full details of all classes in the show and how to enter. Anyone can enter – the more entries we have the better.
In October we usually have a guest speaker in the Village Hall followed in December by a Christmas event – table or door decorations, for example.
The Gardening Club has joined the 21st Century and now has a Facebook page. Go to
www.facebook.com/HunsdonGClub to see messages about the Gardening Club, pictures
from the Show in September and from the Fete in June, and information about forthcoming events. Please post pictures of your garden, favourite plants etc or details
of great gardens to visit or links to websites of interest. If you have any garden problems you can share these as well and hopefully someone can help out. Our email
address is hunsdongc@gmail.com Help us make this a fun online gardening community.
Discounts
A benefit of club membership is the arrangement we have for special discounts from Parkers Bulbs and from Thompson & Morgan seeds. Members can order bulbs, shrubs,
roses and perennials from Parkers Bulbs at wholesale prices and seeds from Thompson & Morgan at a 50% discount on the normal catalogue price.
So that’s who we are and what we do so why not come and join the club? If you are just starting in the gardening world, this is the place to learn. Everything
we do is on an informal basis with a free exchange of gardening advice between members. Just contact anyone on the list below:
